Why reference images matter
Deligo’s AI can only detect products that have reference images. If a product is missing reference images, it may be misclassified or not recognized at all.
When to capture reference images
1. For all new products or variations
Whenever you introduce a new product or a variation (e.g., different sizes or flavors), capture reference images to ensure accurate recognition.
2. When the packaging changes:
- Keep an eye on packaging changes—if a product’s packaging is updated, be sure to add new reference images and remove outdated ones to maintain accuracy.
- Capturing reference photos for holiday and special editions isn't a long-term solution, always add the generic packaging of a product too.

Same product, limited edition packaging: be sure to photograph both versions and remove the special edition once it's out of stock
3. For daily changing items (e.g., freshly prepared meals):
- Photograph them each day before service time.
- Take reference images for each possible variations of the meal (e.g. your dish with the different available topping options)
- Add at least 5 images, but ideally 10–15, to improve accuracy.
- Read about our Daily changing items setting here.
4. For products with multiple variations:
- Capture reference images for each variation.
- If multiple items share a single product listing (e.g., banana, apple, and orange under ‘Fruit’), take reference images of each type to ensure the AI recognizes them correctly.

⚠️ Tip: We strongly recommend having a dedicated person every day who is responsible for taking the pictures before service time, and keeps the inventory up-to-date.

4. Capture the reference images
Press the green capture button to take a photo.
- Only one item at a time – Ensure there are no other products on the kiosk
- Keep surrounding areas clear – The AI detects objects beyond the kiosk base
- The capture button will only turn green if the AI sees a single product in the frame
Here are some quick videos for better understanding:
Differentiating similar products
If two products are similar, they may require additional reference images. If the AI is uncertain about its decision, the kiosk will display a 'What's this?' screen with the top predictions, allowing the customer to manually select the correct option.

Alternatively, you can use dotcode stickers or simple coloured stickers to differentiate similar looking products (see how in dedicated chapters).
Managing missing reference images
Each product in the inventory has a status indicator based on its reference image availability.
- The number next to the camera icon shows how many reference images are available for the product.
- If no reference images are added, the product button turns red, and the number remains 0.

Product status & button colors
- Red Button → No reference images added. The product won’t be recognized by the AI.
- Grey Button → Reference images are available. The product is ready for recognition.
- Grey Button with Red Borders → The product is set to be hidden and does not require reference images at the moment.
